BREEDWHEAT

BREEDWHEAT

The BREEDWHEAT project aims to support the competitiveness of the French wheat breeding sector by responding to society's challenges for sustainable and quality production.

This pre-competitive project is planned over 9 years and represents a total investment of 34 million euros (of which 9 million euros under the Investment in the Future programme). It brings together 26 partners: 13 public research laboratories located at various INRA centres and universities throughout France, 10 seed companies and cooperatives specializing in biotechnology, 2 technical institutes and the Céréales Vallée competitiveness cluster.

BREEDWHEAT combines new high-throughput genotyping and phenotyping technologies to identify genetic factors involved in agronomic characters such as yield, quality and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. It will develop new breeding methods and use untapped genetic resources to identify and combine alleles of interest for new varieties more efficient in environmentally friendly and climate-friendly crop conditions.

The contribution of the BIA Unit through the PVPP and ELIPS teams is to better understand the adaptive response of the grain to abiotic factors through the study of its development using both morphological/histological and molecular approaches.
